“A Mighty Long Way”

Mixed Media Artist, Yvonne Lamar Rogers, 72, Shines in Solo Exhibit at Heath Gallery in Harlem  

 

At 72 years young, mixed media artist, Yvonne Lamar-Rogers is not slowing down. Her solo exhibition, Textures of Life: Mixed Media Torn Paper Collages by Yvonne Rogers, opened at Heath Gallery, September 9th and remains on view through September 30th.  An artist talk in which Roger’s will take guests through a tour of the exhibition will take place September 16th, 2-4pm.

Rogers has been sharing her creative gifts as a mixed media artist, jewelry designer and teaching artist for 32 years. After retiring from a teaching position last year, Rogers renewed her passion for creating her own art and spent a year creating new work for this solo exhibit. Rogers is best known for creating mixed media art that tells vivid, textured stories inspired by her memories of growing up in Detroit, MI during the 50’s & 60’s.

Yvonne’s first art influence was the fabric, tissue paper patterns, buttons and thread used by her mom whose been described as an exceptional seamstress. Cutting and sewing doll clothes made from scraps of fabric given to her by her mother, eventually led to Yvonne discovering her love of mixed media. This versatile medium serves as the canvas for her unique stories, told through a blend of wet and dry media, torn paper, fabric scraps, photography, printmaking, clay, and beyond.

Yvonne’s art has graced the walls of El Barrio's Art Space in New York, PS 109, Rutgers John Cotton Dana Library in Newark, NJ, The Charles H Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, MI, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, OH, and The National & Cultural African American Museum in Wilberforce, OH. Rogers formal art education includes the College for Creative Studies and Design in Detroit, MI, and a BFA in Studio Art with an emphasis in Art Education from Marymount Manhattan College in New York City.
